Older health and keeping fit

A lot of people use over 50 view gyms with trepidation and even fear. They think that they’re places for hyper fit youngsters to go and show off their muscles. That may be true in some gyms but for the most part they’re welcoming and friendly places that cater for all clients, no matter what their age or ability.

When we get older our joints can begin to seize up; this can cause considerable mobility issues. Many people will need to think about the possibility of having a staircase assessment if their knees can no longer take the stairs in their home.

No Excuses

However, this shouldn’t be an excuse not to exercise. Even if you are adamant the gym’s not for you, there is still plenty you can do to stay fit and healthy. Yoga and Pilates are great for people over 50 because they work out the body without excessive strain. With classes for all levels and age groups, it’s a great place to start.

Keep on Running

You might not feel like getting out there and pounding the pavement but running is a fun, free way to exercise. Although you do have to be careful as running, especially on hard ground, can cause damage to joints.

Cycling is also free (once you’ve bought a bike) and is a form of cardiovascular exercise with minimal impact. Swimming is also affordable, works the whole body and is virtually impact free.
