Tried and Tested: Klass Vaki Full Body Support
There are a number of back supports on the market, but can they really help eliminate back pain? Jason Curry tried one out.

  • Can using a back support releive back pain?

Klass Vaki’s Full Body Support System, RRP £295, is an advanced sleep surface for the relief of acute and chronic back pain, which significantly reduces the pressure between the body and the sleep surface. It allows the muscles to completely relax, improves blood circulation and reduces the heart rate. Jason Curry gave it a month’s test drive.

First Impressions

It was a bugger to get out of the box. It’s folded over and therefore under pressure and took a couple of minutes to pull out of the box – if I had serious back pain there is no way I could have got it out. Also, if instead I had tried to cut the box, I would likely cut the support as it is only made of foam.

I then watched the video, which is more of a marketing video than instructions on use. I would have preferred to have had more information/instructions than to keep seeing people rejuvenated after a goods night’s sleep.

Did it Work?

The mattress/back support is a full length support rather than one of the many smaller back supports on the market. Because of this, there is no risk of it moving out of position. The support is supposed to be placed on top of a normal mattress, which means you are raised up above anyone else in the bed by a few inches. Although not very romantic, being separated from you partner, it does mean you get a good night’s sleep without them kicking or poking you, however much they wriggle in the night. It’s also great because you could also use it on its own, or if you go away you can put it in the boot and take it with you.

The supposed benefit of the mattress is all in the shape. Firstly, the mattress is raised up at the sides so that you do not roll out of position. Secondly, the support is curved to mimic the curve of your spine and therefore add extra support. My initial concern was that this would mean you could only use it if you always slept on you back, but it was equally comfortable if I slept on my side.

I have to say that the mattress is very comfortable and over the last month I have slept very well, and have never woken with a stiff back. I can understand how the curve of the mattress supports my back, but it seems too soft to be of any major benefit. But maybe they have found a happy medium between softness and therefore comfort and stiffness and therefore support.

I certainly think that there could be some benefit to using this mattress to help maintain curvature of the spine at night and therefore alleviate some back pain. So the question is, at the hefty price tag of £295 is it worth a try?

The Klass Vaki range also includes a lower back support and a variety of other supports, all designed to help ease back and neck tension whether driving, sitting at a computer or relaxing at home. Visit www.klassvaki.com
